About Us

Many is the time that I have been travelling abroad, and have looked through the huge variety of tourist publications on offer, with the sinking feeling that somehow I am not gaining the same information that the local populace is privy to.

The enormous, glossy advertisements and write-ups extolling the virtues of each restaurant merely convey one clear message to me. Why are they having to advertise if their product is so good? Surely it means that they are shunned by all those in the know, and have to rely on getting gullible tourists - most of whom will never return - to fill their acres of empty seats.

The fact is that the best restaurants never advertise, because they don't need to. When your place is full, why bother to attract more customers, why spend money that you don't need to?

I have been in the restaurant business for over thirty years, and started Porters English Restaurant in London's Covent Garden in 1979, with a clear aim, 'to provide reasonably priced real English food at honest prices'. Still very true today.

As the former President of the Master Chefs of Great Britain and a Committee Member of the Restaurant Association, I have also accumulated an enormous amount of knowledge on which restaurants you can trust to give you honest, value for money, quality meals and which ones try to rip you off.

The Restaurant Guide, unlike most other Internet food guides, is not merely a Yellow Pages style database, but insists that the restaurants are either listed in a major guide, personally known to me, or recommended by members of the British Guild of Food Writers.

So now, if are a visitor to Britain, you are not going to have a problem when you plan your trip, as, all you will need to do is to consult The Restaurant Guide, and you will know where to dine in Britain with all the up to date inside information that you require.

Natives will equally find the information useful, and may even come across somewhere on their front doorstep that they didn't know about before.

So now join me, and make use of my accumulated experience, to gain an insider's view of Britain's restaurants.
