Gauchos - Beethovenstraat (Amsterdam)
This is a place where more fat is what you get! We all know that the meat at whichever Gauchos restaurant you go to is good. Tonight, I tried the one in Beethovenstraat in Amsterdam. As expected the meat was good, the problem was ‘how much meat?’ Four of us took the same kind of meat, but different quantities. At least that was the idea. 400, 300 and 225 grams were ordered, and of course different prices were charged. Now, throughout the meal as each of us ate his/her meat, each of us started removing pieces of fat surrounding the meat. Fat, to be clear, is not meat and should not be eaten, and therefore should not be sold, or charged for to customers. In this Gaucho, fat has its value. It is part of the ‘steak’ you order, as the owner of the establishment gladly argued. The more meat you order, the more fat you get; way more fat. We tried, with no luck, to explain this to the owner who refused to understand, that charging more money to a customer for more fat around their meat when in fact what they were hoping for was more meat was simply not right. After a good ten minutes of begging her to understand, we were not even looking for a refund, but simply for an apology, we gave up. The Gauchos have suffered tonight from poor management, and obvious dishonesty. You need to keep in mind that a steak of 400 grams has as much meat as a 225 gram steak, why pay more then if what you get extra is fat? PS, the service was extremely slow.
Ritzi (Majorca)
I have eaten there for the last three years, every year that I have been to Majorca, and can say that it is absolutely fabulous. Last year I had a great night there with my partner, and came a couple of nights later again with my partner and friends. We hadn't booked and the restaurant was full. We were gutted; I'll definitely be booking for next year.
L'Esplanade (Dordogne)
This is without doubt the finest restaurant in which we have had the honour of dining. The food is specifically very French, and by using only the finest fresh ingredients and with great care in the preparation, the flavours were greatly enhanced to a point, which we have not experienced before. Not inexpensive, but highly recommended. Do not die before visiting this elegant dining room.
Restaurant Churrascaria Rincao, Zürich (Zurich)
We went there with over eight people, and had to wait for a table for around one hour. The service was very unfriendly, and the meat was dry and very salty. I will never go there again.
Bentley's Oyster Bar and Grill - Dublin (Dublin Area)
We were very impressed with Bentley’s from the moment we stepped through the door. The environment was fabulous with great food and superb staff. We will definitely go back.
Villa Tiberio (Marbella)
This is one of the most enchanting restaurants. It has the most wonderful feeling as you walk through the door like you are in the home of a dear friend who has invited you for dinner. The furnishings are tasteful and chic with a hint of Italian roccoco. Walk through a plethora of dining sumptuousness and out onto the patio where in the summer you can dine by candle light, looking out over the private and beautifully sculptured gardens.
Sterne Foifi (Zurich)
According to a recent Zurich newspaper survey the Sterne Foifi, and its sister restaurant Vordere Sterne provide the best Bratwurst -veal sausage- in town. Our recent experience supports this. We went for the Bratwurst and Rosti and were not disappointed. Other dishes looked equally appetising as they were delivered to neighbouring tables, especially the venison, which is in season at the moment. There's an extensive wine list, and a good selection of open wines served by the glass. The service was friendly and prompt, and the ambience relaxed. It was altogether a good evening out with a couple of friends. I'm planning to go again soon.
Paris-Moskau (Berlin)
This is a super nice restaurant. The service is very friendly, and the food is good. I would definitely recommend this place.
Lua (Majorca)
We visited this restaurant in September while staying in Soller upon the recommendation of the owner of the casita where we were staying. A great recommendation it was too - the John Dory in particular lived up to the hype, delicious. The seafood pancake starter was out of this world. We got there early and managed to get one of the outside tables, which gave us a wonderful view of the marina. Not the cheapest restaurant in Port de Soller but certainly worth it for a special evening.
Raphael Restaurant (Brussels / Bruxelles)
Raphael is a gem of a place. The inside is an eccentric mix of styles- traditional in a bonkers type way but very cosy. However, all restaurants should be judged by the food, and Raphael delivers. In my opinion, as good as some of the vastly overpriced, better known places on the Grand Place and a million times better than the countless seafood ones behind the Grand Place. The lamb in rosemary gravy was amazing. We visit every time we are in Brussels and recommend it unreservedly. And you won't melt your credit card either.
