Fentiman Arms, The Description

The Fentiman Arms is located on Fentiman Road, Kennington, a street with large elegant Victorian houses on both sides and offices at either end. Only a cricket ball throw from The Oval it is well worth booking a lunch if you are going there to watch.

Equally close to Vauxhall, their wonderful first floor private room is ideal for parties when guests come from all over London! It can seat up to 40 and they have even hosted drinks parties for 80. There is also a garden designed by Stephen Woodham, a Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medal Winner, making outside eating and drinking a real pleasure.

Food is interesting and reasonably priced, choices could include starters such as terrine provencal with black olive ciabatta, watercress and baby spinach salad or crisp fried whitebait, sweet chilli and ginger dip, with most dishes around the £5 mark.

Mains on offer might be roast pork with apple chutney; pan-fried breast of duck with port glaze, parsnip rosti, green beans; grilled cod fillet with gruyere crust, fennel and celery roasted in Pernod, seafood béchamel or home-made potato gnocchi with peppers sunflower seed and roquette pesto, Andalusian garlic bread - generally from about nine to thirteen pounds. They also have specials every day on the blackboard.

Your Reviews of Fentiman Arms, The

Achurr (13 November 2008)

We just moved into the area and decided to have a nightcap at the Fentiman Arms. We arrived around 9:30pm. The bar was warm and cheery although it smelled strongly of fish, the plat du jour. We ordered two glasses of the recommended house red wine, which was undrinkable. It was sharp and acidic, with no body flavour or nose to speak of, and at six quid a glass not inexpensive either. We complained about the wine and the manager, a cheery chap said ‘oh really?’ and offered to change them for us. He then plonked two glasses on our table, without telling us what they were and walked off with our originals. These two glasses of wine tasted just as bad and I then ordered a beer. The manager passed the table several times without once enquiring if the wine was better. Eventually I asked what wine it was, and was told it was 2003 Bordeaux. As a wine connoisseur I found this hard to believe, and when I explained it was just as undrinkable, I was met with yet another impertinent and arrogant ‘oh really?’ We then abandoned our drinks and told the manager we would never return, and were met with yet another ‘oh really?’ I was disgusted at the service.

On the 3rd Feb 2005 we were renting the Fentiroom to do some presentations. We had the pleasure of eating some of the superb food while we were there. It is amazing what the chef can do with a bit of salad leaves and the steak was tender and very tasty. I hope that the manager realizes what a great chef he has on his staff. During our stay we only received kind and friendly serving from the staff at Fentiman Arms.

regards Solvej and Elna
