Ffiona's Description
What is it about the English and their restaurants? We manage to turn out the most unusual and charming individuals, who act as hosts or, in this case, the hostess. Ffiona Reid-Owen has her little fiefdom - or should it be ffiefdom in her case? - in Kensington Church Street, where she presides and occasionally quite forcefully advises you on what you should be choosing from her highly eclectic menu.
It is a delightfully cosy venue, whilst 'la patronne' makes sure that the whole experience is one that you will never forget. Fabric covered walls, sheets of music scores lining the ceiling, wooden tables and cushioned chairs, candle light, and soft music make the ambiance warm and intimate. Even though you might be visiting the bistro for the first time, the friendly service will soon make you feel at home.
Whilst some might recall their school days at Eton or Harrow in the style of the dishes, most would accept that Ffiona turns out a much better quality than their alma mater ever did. Many also comment that though the food is a touch rustic in style, the quality, allied to the sensible prices, ensures that it is a totally pleasurable event.
The menu opens with starters of homemade soup; duck pate made with Madeira and served with toast, and a fresh fig, watermelon and feta cheese salad with mint. Amongst the main courses are roasted rib of Scottish beef with Yorkshire pudding; chicken Kiev, considered by many to be the best in the area, ffiona's ffab ffishcakes on fresh tomato and basil sauce, and a beautifully roasted pheasant on braised red cabbage with stuffing, bread sauce, cranberry sauce, roasted potatoes and game chips - but only in season obviously.
A white and milk layered chocolate mousse or bread and butter pudding helps bring the meal to an end. A carefully chosen wine list embraces some fine numbers from around the world.
