Fish House, The

Nestling in the South Downs, this 1765 former Coaching Inn combines a two-rosette restaurant, award-winning wine list, with over 600 labels, with accompanying accommodation. The focus is on being a restaurant with rooms. You could relax in front of the open fires, savour a meal with with organic produce from local suppliers, enjoy a wide range of house wines, from £15, with wines from the glass, or splash out for something special.

The menu is a la carte, which Head Chef Chris Richards changes regularly to reflect seasonal produce. It might include organic lamb or beef, sea bass, Dover sole, lobster, Grouse, or local crab, organic steak or calf's liver.

The menu is served in the laid-up restaurant - which has a piano being played on Saturday nights, or in the more relaxed bar. Also in the bar area, guests can enjoy a snack menu, each day for lunch except Sundays, the Average Cost per Head is based on that, the full menu would cost much the same as in the evening.

Set where it is at the foot of the South Downs naturally there is great walking, and nine boutique bedrooms in which to relax after dinner; perhaps with a massage (on availability).
