FishWorks - Bath Description

If you like a really excellent, highly original fish and seafood restaurant-cafe, then this is the place for you; with branches in Bath, Marylebone, Mayfair and Richmond, FishWorks delivers what it promises, using really fresh ingredients.

It remains loyal to the simple style, high quality produce, service and accessible approach to fish and seafood that has achieved it a host of accolades. These include, The Good Food Guide's 'Best Fish Restaurant 2000' and Country Living's 'Fishmonger of 1999'.

For any lover of dishes piscatorial, FishWorks is a delight, offering choices that could include: crisp fried goujons of sole with aioli; a plate of their own smoked wild salmon; fresh Dartmouth crab salad with tarragon mayonnaise and cucumber; spaghetti with clams, chilli, garlic and parsley; char-grilled squid with lemon, thyme and garlic, or roasted monkfish with lime and sage leaf. Many of their dishes can be ordered as a lighter starter or full main course.

Wines start with five choices at £15, and their list naturally concentrates more on whites than red. As all of this is combined with friendly and efficient service, every major town could do with a FishWorks.

Sue (16 February 2008)

We booked by phone for the evening and when we arrived, they denied a reservation. After serious questioning about when and who took our reservation, we were reluctantly offered a table by the door with a strong smell of fish from the shop - not a great welcome. Then the waiter told us a list of things not available that day, and it included squid, fish pie, seafood platter etc. There were 7 or 8 dishes not available. It was Valentine’s the day before so they had been 'very busy' and presumably that had caught them unawares.

We felt unwelcome and wondered why we were about to eat at a restaurant that did not care about how we felt. We had eaten there before and felt the food was very good but the service and the atmosphere left a lot to be desired. We won't be returning as there are too many good restaurants that actually care about their customers. Fishworks isn't one of them.

Sally Annan (13 December 2006)

Six of us ate at Fishworks Bath on Friday 8th December. Our table was booked for 8 o’clock but we had to wait outside for 20 minutes until it was ready. One hour's delay for our starters and one hour's wait after that for our main courses. Apparently there was an oven problem in the kitchens. There didn't appear to be a maitre d' in charge of the restaurant. The staff were fantastic (apparently terrified to enter the kitchen!) and when the food eventually came it was excellent. Our bill was high due to no house wine being available (!) and more ordered than normal due to the excessive waiting times. We feel we should have been offered more of an apology and perhaps 'something on the house' by way of compensation. Or maybe informed on our arrival of the problems and we would have eaten elsewhere.
