On the Milton Estate, just to the west of Peterborough, this traditional pub with a handsome thatched roof looks every inch what beleagured Englishmen dream about as they pretend to enjoy the searing heat beside some Caribbean sweat-hole, sipping their rum betimes. Not that you can't drink quality rum here as well, but you also have a choice of really well-kept traditional ales and eclectic collection of house wines from £10.75, many by the glass, with superior back-up from an elegant wine list. The changing menu is supported by a wide choice of interesting blackboard specials, all served by friendly and helpful staff. Recent refurbishment has resulted in a better layout with no loss of the charm for which the pub is renowned. Confusingly it sometimes still gets called The Green Man - just in case you have to ask the locals for directions.
