Set in a little side street just off Ayr's Sandgate, one passes through an unpromising door and down a flight of stairs to a jolly little temple of eating in a series of inter-connected cellars. Brian and Odette Murphy along with Netta Fleming now run this favourite eaterie in the old bank vaults; it was totally refurbished in October 2003. Desserts are all hand produced by Brian and his trusty assistant James Macintosh. An excellent range of wines bears eloquent testimony to the long influence of Ian Cumming and prices are reasonable. Scotland has always had the reputation of less than imaginative food in Australia, but that was all completely dispelled by my visit at the beginning of May to Fouters Bistro. I have never tasted such a delightfully prepared mix of flavours of the scallops, and the local deer was absolutely spectacular, both were tasty and tender - a difficult combination to achieve. The service and the chef need to be congratulated and encouraged to keep up the good work.

This is a good restaurant serving good food and definitely to be recommended. I've eaten there, with both colleagues and family, several times over the past couple of years. Although I can appreciate the recent reviewers’ disappointment over the children policy, I can understand it. The various cellar rooms would not be ideal for younger children and I write this as someone who regularly eats in proper restaurants with my own children aged four and nine.
