As with many of its kind this slightly out of town Peterborough pub, built on the grand scale of the '30s when brewers were expanding their estates as the motor car made itself felt, has had a chequered career, but now, taken over by Orchid Pubs seems to have found its sense of direction.

Whilst still a pub the emphasis is very much on the restaurant side, and Head Chef Tony Maualdi offers a menu that spans the world, with a nice emphasis on Far Eastern dishes incorporating local produce, witness char sui Spalding lamb cutlets with cucumber relish and wok fried vegetables, perhaps followed by poached pears and cinnamon cream.

Their Sunday roast is a triumph of tradition, and a suitably supportive wine list yields when required to some of the best real ales such Timothy Taylor Landlord, Greene King IPA and Moreland Speckled Hen.
