Fox & Hounds Inn, The Description

On the face of it there is a certain strangeness about one of the best dining pubs in the country being located in the middle of nowhere, having no website, and doing very little in the way of advertising, yet being fully booked as a matter of course.

Until you realise that it is overlooked by the spectral Whitby Abbey from its storm swept headland, where folklore has it that Dracula came ashore, at which point more or less anything becomes possible.

Having negotiated the winding lane and found the pub, you will also find ex-Ivy chef Jason Davies, ably backed by his wife Sue, who has London restaurant experience at Odettes, dispensing between them the sort of quality cooking that wowed them in London for long enough.

In Whitby you will often have to join a long queue to buy their fabled fish and chips. At the Fox and Hounds you can enjoy seared haddock fillet with puy lentils and grilled fennel, served with a rosemary and anchovy sauce, or superb linguine made with crab, chilli and lemon. Boar sausages are a speciality.

With 34 covers life can be quite, shall we say, friendly, but that's part of the charm and it goes well with the unreconstructed décor and concentration on the food.

No shadow of doubt this is one for the little black book, two pages after D for Dracula.

Your Reviews of Fox & Hounds Inn, The

Neil and Pascale (14 September 2009)

In August, 2009, leaving York at 5.30, we drove straight across the moors from Pickering and arrived in Goldsborough in time for a coastal walk and to breathe in deep lungfuls of sea air. It was a perfect start to a wonderful evening at the Fox and Hounds. We ordered a simple starter of green beans with olives for me and calamari with chilli for the guvnor. In each case the main ingredient tasted delicious with the dressing serving to highlight rather than hide. The guvnor declared his pork loin with cannelloni bean mash the best piece of pork he'd ever had, meltingly tender but not at all fatty. My grilled plaice tasted like it had just swam up the coast that afternoon, delicious. Shepherd's purse blue and oatcakes, warmed slightly, with a generous handful of cherries and a glass of red whose name I've forgotten, rounded off the meal. They have generous portions, attentive service and reasonable price for the quality. Only criticism is the wobbly table but by the time we started eating the wobble was forgotten.

Mike Thompson (10 May 2009)

This restaurant is well worth visiting. Lunch on Saturday was excellent. Cheap it isn't, but neither is it over-priced and the portions are spot on, if you want a great plateful of food then I suggest you go to any of the growing number of places that are putting quantity over quality. The welcome was friendly and the whole place was spotlessly clean and absolutely charming. This is certainly somewhere we will be visiting again.
