Franklin's Restaurant @ Cluny Bank
69 St. Leonards Road, Forres, IV36 1DW
Holiday makers who chance upon Forres, Morayshire in North Scotland are enchanted by this beautiful town, renowned for its golf courses. The Cluny Bank Hotel is well established in a listed, historical building and like many others of its ilk, retains the old world charm while providing the best of modern amenities to its guests. Franklin's, their restaurant, has been in the news lately for winning an award for innovative use of local produce. An interesting if frequently changing menu has peeled black tiger prawns, pan fried with garlic and okra among the starters. For mains, the Aberdeen Angus fillet steak with a roasted echalion shallot and a sherry jus makes an excellent dish, while the seared goose breast with a sage and onion dumpling and light apple gravy is equally acceptable.Holiday makers who chance upon Forres, Morayshire in North Scotland are enchanted by this beautiful town, renowned for its golf courses. REVIEWS OF Franklin's Restaurant @ Cluny Bank
Bob and Moira (19 February 2008)
Our first visit to Franklin's coincided with Valentine's Day. Every aspect of the evening was a delight. The friendly welcome of the owners - husband and wife team of Lloyd and Julia Kenny set the standard for the whole dining experience. With Lloyd combining the roles of Maitre d' and Chef, and Julia doing practically everything else, they were constantly 'on the go' but most attentive to us and our fellow diners. The food was of a very high standard.
The menu changes at two to three week intervals. I had a beautifully light onion and cheese tart starter, roast Guinea fowl with a selection of seasonal fresh vegetables, and delicious raspberry mousse with white chocolate ice cream. My wife had lobster and langoustine bisque, noisettes of lamb delicately flavoured with lavender, and a lemon torte with creme fraiche. Between courses we were entertained to bread and olives canapes, and strawberry dipped in chocolate served with pink champagne. To accompany our meal we had a glass each of a very pleasant Shiraz, and a bottle of Glenlivet lightly sparkling water. The price was excellent value for such a wonderful meal in a very lovely restaurant. I can whole-heartedly recommend Franklin's for a special occasion. Be prepared for the eccentricity of Lloyd - especially when he 'narrates' the dessert menu! We hope you'll enjoy it just as much as we did.
