French, The Description

Fancy a touch of French in Manchester? The renowned French restaurant at the Midland Hotel has a well seasoned reputation that goes way back, and in terms of décor and setting is everything you might expect it to be.

First essential is a maître d' called, naturally, Bruno. After that expect to find a menu that is unashamedly Gallic, together with a wine list to match. Not that the kitchen brigade shy away from helping themselves to English dishes, with Lancashire hotpot, and Cumbrian lamb with kidneys and sweetbreads well to the fore. The tortellini of chicken with wild mushrooms and black truffles soon transports you back to La France.

It is within the desserts range that The French really comes into its own, with such delicacies as stem ginger and rice pudding. Service is elaborate, to the point of flamboyance at times, and as with any decent French restaurant the napery, cutlery and glass are immaculate.

Fixed Dinner

  • £22 (2 courses) to £38 (3 courses), Tues - Thurs

Your Reviews of French, The

Mils (10 October 2007)

The food is stunning. The last time I ate at The French, I had the most gorgeous rice pudding with raspberry sorbet, which was just divine. The dining experience is intimate yet friendly. The bread trolley is to die for and I don’t think you can beat the quality of produce used. No wonder it has received the top restaurant for Manchester award for a number of years.

JeffG (24 July 2006)

The room is not over large, yet the tables have good space. The decor matches the traditional feel of the Midland Hotel, but this place for me is more about the eating experience than the lighting and curtains.

An interesting selection of quality ingredients cooked to perfection and presented by attentive yet unobtrusive staff. The chateaubriand, and the Dover sole were both highlights, but everything is of the standard you would expect to get for the price you pay. For that special occasion, this is a great place to come, it costs a lot, but you come away thinking it was worth it.
