Froggies at The Timber Batts

School Lane, Bodsham, Ashford, TN25 5JQ

Discover this authentic French restaurant set in a charming hamlet in the Ashford countryside. Chef Joel Gross has chosen Timber Batts, a fifteenth century pub built during the reign of Henry VII, to complement the cuisine and the crowds that are flocking there are ample proof that he has found the right combination. The interior stays true to the period in which the building was constructed with a beamed and timbered bar that features an inglenook fireplace the size of a small room. The restaurant has its own huge fireplace and old pine tables - some with low back settees - and candles. The popular dishes include stuffed mussels, a classic duck confit salad, a perfect rack of lamb served with herbs and prime fillet of beef with Roquefort sauce.

REVIEWS OF Froggies at The Timber Batts

John Morrison (23 November 2008)

We had our first meal at Froggies today and can endorse the glowing reviews below; it is very high quality cooking and good value. The house Loire wines at £15 a bottle are produced by Joel Gross' cousin and have an authentic ‘gout du terroir’ - i.e. typically earthy French. My wife had garlic petoncles, which were incredibly flavourful and I opted for a smoked salmon millefeuille which was actually a three decker, on thin crispy pastry discs, of salmon terrine and smoked salmon and were much better than the usual stodgy mille-feuille. Our main course was chops for my wife and slow-cooked belly of pork for me. Both were cooked to perfection, high quality produce handled respectfully. My pork was melt-in-the-mouth and had the best crackling I have ever encountered, the vegetables were seasonal and in reasonable portions. Indeed portion control was spot-on; so many country establishments feel they have to load your plate up to a point where it actually puts one off. With friendly and not over-intrusive service and a generally warm and welcoming atmosphere, we will definitely be returning and may pop in on our way to or from Hythe to try the French pub grub. Plus, Froggies source from Wincheap butchers in Canterbury, Griggs fishmongers in Hythe, and from the Goods Shed in Canterbury Patriana, hams etc, and Tom, English cheeses - all suppliers we know and trust. I am sorry about Mr Innes' unfortunate episode, he obviously appreciates and enjoys Froggies' cuisine and I hope he gives it another try.

P Wood (3 October 2008)

We eat at Froggies quite often and the food is wonderful. The owner Joel and his front of house Marie-Therese are always very welcoming and French chef Romy produces wonderful classical dishes from France. We always take our foodie friends there from all over the world. They have all come away from Froggies saying how wonderful it is. In fact one of our visiting friend, who was off on holiday to France the following day, emailed me later to say she enjoyed the food at Froggies more than any of the restaurants she had visited in France. A couple of weeks ago we took two other friends from London for Sunday lunch to Froggies and they are real foodies. Judy said it was the best confit of duck she had ever had and Graham who is very fussy, loved his steak, which he said was the bench test of any restaurant. We feel very fortunate to have a restaurant of this quality in our area.
