Gabbro Restaurant Description
Just a stone's throw away from Holyrood Park and the Commonwealth Swimming Pool, Gabbro can be found tucked away within the newly refurbished boutique Salisbury Hotel, on the garden level with direct access to the beautiful walled gardens and outside dining area.
When I think of gabbro I recall the rugged, dark, abrasive rock from which much of the Isle of Skye is formed. Nothing could be less true of this gem within a casket, and as a place in which to take refuge from the less admirable vagaries of life in busy, everyday Edinburgh, it could hardly be bettered.
Gabbro lunches or dinners tend to carry a sophisticated arena, using fresh Scottish ingredients to create dazzling dishes with a French flair and when the evening shifts and moods take place you'll find yourself engaged with an array of choices. Starters may vary from a cassolette of sauteed scallops and tiger prawns on ratatouille vegetables to a month watering beef carpaccio.
Main courses might include fillet of seabass with a saffron beurre blanc served with French beans and roast potatoes or warm polenta salad served roast red peppers stuffed with aubergine caviar on a bed of rocket. A choice of 'treats' includes a hot chocolate mi-cuit served with ice cream or rosemary crème brûlée!

Your Reviews of Gabbro Restaurant
Luigi Logiodice (31 January 2008)
After a long and hard thought about where to go and have dinner, we decided to give Gabbro a shot. The place is cosy and nicely decorated. That night I ordered the sea bass and my wife had duck. Both dishes were excellent, moist, perfectly cooked, beautifully presented and generous portions! For pudding, we had the rosemary crème brule - an unusual but a great combination. We also had the opportunity to talk to the staff and the chef - helpful and friendly. We won't doubt in going back.

We decided to give Gabbro a try as we were staying in the hotel above - the weather was awful and we couldn't be bothered going out. The food was amazing. Speaking with the waiter, we learnt that Gabbro had only been open a short time, but it is sure to get a great reputation over time. We recommend the duck with raspberry jus with crispy leeks and the grilled sea bass - both perfectly cooked and presented. For dessert we chose rosemary infused crème brulee which sounded strange but tasted divine, and the chocolate miscuit - a gooey yet, light chocolate pudding to die for. We highly recommend it - the food is amazing, ambience relaxed and cosy, and the service is attentive and friendly. We spent £55 for the best meal of our travels.
