Gastro Description
Gastro is situated very conveniently opposite the Clapham Picture house. With its red neon "restaurant" sign glowing in the darkness it is reminiscent of classical Parisian eateries from the outside. Going inside cannot disappoint any self respecting francophile gourmet: both its menu and wine list are as authentic as you can get outside France to that unique and quintessentially gallic dining experience.
The first clue of what is to come is the mandatory provision of fresh bread and unsalted butter; something of a rarity in all but the pricier restaurants. The staff also happen to contribute to the illusion of stepping momentarily across the channel as they appear to be uniformly recruited on the basis of French ethnicity. Not only does this add authenticity, it enforces the impression that it takes someone of continental upbringing to show passion for food even when their only role is to serve and take care of visiting diners.
The average cost for a two course meal for two is around £50 including
rather nice wine.

The set up and atmosphere is fantastic - very homely and authentic feel about the place. Starters were great - lovely fresh meat platter to share with huge portions. Sadly it went down hill from there - a very long way. We waited 40 minutes post our starter being cleared before the waitress wondered why we were sat empty glassed and empty table. Upon enquiring she then disappeared for 10 minutes before telling us it would be ‘2 minutes’. After ten minutes we complained to the manager who went to check and told us they had just started serving it up. When the food arrived ten minutes later it was cold, tasteless and smothered in oil - not what was expected of what should have effectively been chicken in bacon. Upon complaining about the food being cold and taking over an hour to arrive we were met with the shrug and then were asked if something was wrong when we didn't pay the service charge. Unfortunately after such high hopes and a good start - a completely expensive disaster.

I've been to Gastro twice in the last few months and I am definitely planning to go back. The atmosphere was wonderful, staff very friendly, service was quick, the food absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. I'm so surprised to see bad reviews, but I guess all restaurants have off days and people are more likely to complain about bad service than they are to crow about good service. I've been impressed.
