Gaylord

79-81 Mortimer Street, London, W1W 7SJ

The Mughlai fare at Gaylord is a fitting tribute to the rich cuisine of the royalty of the erstwhile North Indian states. Starters range from gosht masaledhar fry - spicy grilled lamb sautéed with herbs, to murgh badami shorba a hearty soup made of chicken and almonds. The lengthy main course includes tandoori dishes, Gaylord specialities, biryani, seafood and lamb delicacies - all of which have an appropriate descriptions. The 'nawab khana' or food of the kings is a fixed menu titled Maharaja and Maharani feast. Desserts cover choices like gajar ka halwa, a delicious carrot based sweet and a soft and creamy milk pudding called 'kheer'.

REVIEWS OF Gaylord

Jnorell (20 August 2007)

A total rip-off! There was a £1.50 cover charge for a poppadum each, whether you want it or not. This was served with communal sauces, obviously recycled from another table! The pints were £5 each. Food was overpriced, overcooked and served slightly cold. The service was slow, and incompetent, we had to ask for table water three times, and still only got one glass for seven people, and outright rude. One waiter tried to clear the table after we'd eaten, stuck his behind in my face and 'apologised' by saying "sorry, mate".

After this, we decided to not pay the optional fifteen percent gratuity added to our bill without asking us. The waiter then said the bill was short, and after pointing out we didn't wish to pay the gratuity, the restaurant manager came out to demand the tip! We very angrily pointed out the appalling service and rudeness in asking for a gratuity and left. Bottom line is that this is probably the worst restaurant experience I've had in London. Avoid at all costs, there are many good Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi restaurants in London. This isn't one of them!

Nice food, but rather expensive. Beware that there is a £1.50 cover charge, a pint costs £5 and gratuity of 15% is automatically added to your bill.
