Gazette Description

Gazette is an authentic brasserie in the style of local French village cafés, a little heaven of true hospitality where one can find at anytime during the day something to suit the occasion: an early breakfast, a comfortable chill out with a glass of wine in the lounge, a business lunch or a romantic night out. Gazette offers a pleasant atmosphere of well-being.

One of the fortes is of course the food presented through a menu/Gazette consisting of a "menu principal" changing seasonally with classics such as hot foie gras, steak tartare, mussels marinières, roasted chicken or tasty risotto. It also offers a large selection of "plat du jour" with 4 starters and 4 main courses and desserts changing daily so that each visit holds a welcoming surprise.

Their cuisine aims to be simple and generous and is based on provincial cooking, the serving and sharing element and conviviality of their table makes it a very special experience recalling the warmth and cordiality of simple French cuisine.

They also feature an all day menu with a selection of fresh sandwiches, crepes, salads and soups and have recently developed those items to be available to take away for those who work too hard with also croissant, pain au chocolat and coffees.

Gazette is open every day from 8am and offers for breakfast a selection of cooked meal and continental delicacies with omelette, croquet monsieur, fresh croissant, morning basket and even a "full French" platter. The lounge is also available to catch up on the TV news or read the papers available everyday.

The 1930s bar holds a selection of fine Beers, from the organic draft beer produced at the Meantime brewery in Greenwich to a fantastic selection of Belgium and northern France beers or the local Battersea porter. As for the wine Gazette takes it very seriously and offers a selection of 170 references from well-established but also upcoming European wine regions. A lot of their wines are also available by the glass or by the carafe.

You can either choose from the list or prefer to walk straight into their charming wine cellar made of bricks and cave gravels and enjoy an aperitif there while choosing your bottle directly from the shelves.

Set on the upper floor the private room offers a fantastic facility for birthdays and parties or for the local business to organise meetings and business lunch out of the office. The Brittany farm table seats 14 people and can be used at any time during the day at no room hire cost, all you need to do is reserve the room in advance.

Charming, character full and simple. This sums up Gazette and the design certainly sets the tone. An old Menhir stone from Paimpol on the east coast of Brittany welcomes you together with an old Patisserie marble table, solid oak floor all over and for the walls a polished plaster in a metallic and chocolate theme, their upper floor opens up through a glass and wood balustrade onto a large room with comfortable leather banquette, cousins and thwarts, mirrors and nacre chandelier.

In the Bar area the 3 pieces counter was brought from Lille in Northern France and dates back from the 1930's when it was design for a local bistrot, the lounge has comfortable leather sofas available for the morning coffee or for a pre-dinner aperitif or a fine brandy from their digestives cabinet.

Set in the Alcove area is an old farm cooker from the 1900's, built by the Godin manufacturer it was recovered from a field in the coal mining regions of northern France and restored to offer an original communal table with a glass tabletop for 10 persons.

Gazette also offers serious al fresco dining on the plaza with a beautiful large terrace facing south just a few yards from the river. For private dining or large parties, Gazette does it like no one else. Their cocktail party and set menu format is a rare find. They bring you the atmosphere of convivial banquet and warm family reunion with a multitude of dishes served in the centre of the table.

Your Reviews of Gazette

Rachel S (12 May 2008)

My husband and I visited Gazette a number of times since moving to Clapham last year. Its location is rather obscure but really worth the effort. The food, wine and service have been fantastic every time we have been there and seem to get better. I’d highly recommend this superb restaurant.

Richard Elliot-Square (29 December 2007)

I was loathe to go to Gazette mainly because of its location in a modern riverside block - it was a grey post Christmas day - but all changed once through the portal of this brasserie! The food is faultless and in the true tradition of the French style so lacking in London at the moment. There were five of us and each chose a different menu - presentation and taste was truly an experience. It is an excellent find!
