Gee's Restaurant

61 Banbury Road, Oxford, OX2 6PE

Gee's grew out of a handsome Victorian conservatory, ten minutes out from the city centre, masterminded by the present owner Jeremy Mogford. Although the cuisine is essentially British there is a quite a pronounced Mediterranean influence at work, making for interest and occasionally, surprise. There is plenty of evidence of careful sourcing for ingredients and my heart lifts whenever I see Buccleuch beef featured on any menu. The wine list is formidable. Despite being quite expensive, the overall standards and ambience are high and there are some remarkably good value options, such as the three course set lunch for £16.

REVIEWS OF Gee's Restaurant

Anybody interested in good food and ambience would do well to go to Gee's. You can eat and drink well without the aftertaste of the bill being out of proportion with the experience. I called in advance and the members of staff were happy to advice on the free parking that is available opposite the restaurant. Set in a huge Victorian conservatory, once a florist and greengrocer’s, and lit up by night, Gee's is as elegant on the inside as it is from the outside. I went for dinner with a friend. There was a twenty first birthday party, a business dinner and a family with young children. It was pretty lively and the members of staff were friendly and helpful.

To start, I had the fish soup with rouille, gruyere and croutons for £6.95. This was exquisite and not too rich, but with plenty of taste. My friend had the cured salmon and Jersey crab with lemon dressing. I've got to say I haven't taste crab that good before. For our main course my friend had the roast pork fillet, pork belly and pea puree for £19.50. Evidently the slow roast pork belly fillet was melt in the mouth texture, and full of flavour. I had the sea bream, butter beans and leek dressing for £18.95. The sea bream was cooked for just the right amount of time, and from the taste I could tell it was extremely fresh and went well with the butter beans. I have to admit I had the chips, which were great. The waiter advised us on the wine, which went very well with it. We shared a pudding, and I ate most of it. It was a sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream, which was totally yummy for £6.95. Our total bill was as we expected with no hidden cover charge, or extras. The prices for individual items can be found on the up-to-date web site of Gee’s.

I went to Gee's a couple of weeks ago with two friends. The place looked quite sophisticated, and the members of staff were welcoming and friendly. The food was great with their set menu being a good price for what we got. We got a bit carried away with the good wine list, and great puddings. I'd recommend it for a good night out.
