It would be a great mistake to pass by this modest-looking establishment taken over recently by Gary and Joanna Thompson. Overlooking the river at the back of the inn is a pleasant dining room in which a fairly short but well-chosen menu is available. Items of note are the smoked chicken and leek terrine with grain mustard yoghurt, succeeded by grilled chicken breast on Italian bean broth. Home made ice-cream slips down well. The meals are supported by a simple and reasonably priced wine list with house wine at £8.95Modern European

The first evening we went with friends. The bar was not a portent of things to come and the meal was superb. We went back the following evening, and enjoyed it not one jot the less. Nearly enough said, but if you don't believe me, do go and try for yourself.

I have to say that the service, food and value for money was exceptional. I have eaten at the General on several occasions while visiting friends and would recommend it to all.
It is no way pretentious and beats an awful lot of London based restuarants. From the entrance you are welcomed by owner Joanna - a very personal touch. Be careful not to miss it when they have finished the bypass. You will be missing a treat!
