George & Dragon
82 High Street, Watton-at-Stone, SG14 3TA
In the early 17th century George and Dragon has done its bit to serve the locals, and apart from being a watering hole, a butcher's shop and coal merchants at the rear were also integrated with the original structure. The old touches still remain - beams, soft lighting and oak furniture - while the small dining room is a charming place for a cosy tête-à-tête. The impressive modern British menu could include pheasant pastie with caper ginger and raisin butter, and smoked haddock topped with tomato concasse for starters. Main courses feature creamy coconut spiced tiger prawns served with basmati rice and a mango salsa raita, and a millionaire's bun fillet steak in a bread roll with square chips, homemade coleslaw and mixed leaves. In the early 17th century George and Dragon has done its bit to serve the locals, and apart from being a watering hole, a butcher's shop and coal merchants at the rear were also integrated with the original structure. Catch up with friends over a pint of beer or just sit back and read the newspapers at the bar.
