Your Reviews of George at Nunney, The

Adrievdl (16 February 2009)

The new management has undertaken a much needed refurbishment. As a result, the bar, lounge and restaurant areas already look light and airy. Sunday roasts are drawing the crowds from far and wide; the new landlord appears to have taken many loyal regulars with him from his previous pub. Rare Aberdeen Angus beef was a treat, although perhaps not to the liking of those who prefer their meat well-done. The lunchtime menu includes baguettes, burgers, terrines, soup, salads and excellent homemade beef and ale pies. In the evening the kitchen team really comes into its own with a gastropub-style selection of dishes based on seasonal, mainly locally sourced ingredients. Provenance appears to be very important to Head Chef Wayne Carnegie. Service is usually efficient and many of the wines are available by the glass. At my last visit, a roaring fire added to the atmosphere. I opted out of the dessert options and had a generous cheese board instead, which included the outstanding Somerset cheddar called Godminster. The George has about a dozen rooms, although I haven't tried these. The location is good for visits to Bath - 12 miles, Babington House, Longleat, Wells and Stourhead. Dogs are welcome, but kids under 14 are - according to a notice on the door - not. After our meal we took a gentle stroll across the road to the pretty castle ruin. All in all a very pleasant experience and much recommended.
