Ginger Fox, The Description

The Ginger Fox Public House is the most recent addition to the group of restaurants that owns the Ginger Pig, The Gingerman in Norfolk Square and Gingerman at Drakes - all in and around the Brighton area. Earlier this public house was known as Shaves Thatch and, as apart of the recent makeover, it has acquired a new thatched roof in addition to a new name.

Their lush garden and large car park tempt you to stop for lunch or enjoy an afternoon tea. The pub is an equally attractive venue for dinner with friends. The special rare breed hog roast they serve on weekends is popular.

The owner and his dedicated staff help diners relax in this food-oriented pub, which focuses on local and seasonal produce and has warm, friendly service. You can begin a meal there with chicken liver, ceps, button onions with potato galette and madeira or grilled tuna loin, beetroot puree and herb salad among other choices.

For the big event you can choose from braised veal cheeks with buttered mash, onion beignet and sauce, cod with Toulouse sausage, wild mushrooms and bean casserole or settle for the lighter corn fed chicken with Swiss chard and confit thyme potatoes. If you prefer dishes that are less substantial, try the Welsh rarebit with Sussex ale or move on to the English and Irish cheeses on offer.

If you are looking for something sweet, sample the blood orange cornet, mousse, jelly and confit zest or opt for the bitter chocolate timbale served with caramel banana and ice cream. In addition to award winning wines from Chapel Down and Ridgeview, they also have a healthy selection of ales and beers.

You can enjoy a relaxed, freshly cooked meal, nurse a drink and soak in the pleasant atmosphere, that make dining at The Ginger Fox not just a pleasure but a memorable event.

Your Reviews of Ginger Fox, The

Adam F (30 August 2008)

We have just been to the Ginger Fox having driven by several times thinking it might be interesting. It was a lovely day so we decided to eat outside. Initially the members of staff were very friendly and the service was good. When I saw the menu I was a little disappointed as I expected slightly more choice and the main course prices surprised me slightly but we made our choices and the starter came quickly. I had the very pleasant sweet corn and clam chowder after I had ordered the quail, which they had run out of - it was only mid lunch time so why had they run out? My partner had the basil, pine nut and Parmesan battered parcels. Both were well cooked and full of flavour and perfect for a starter. My main course was a duck dish with a spring onion and potato patty with a mizo dressing and pak choi with sesame seed dressing. This was okay but the duck was slightly overcooked and the dressing was lacking outright punch. My partner had the falafel, which was served on a slate and looked really nice. In reality it was again okay but was lacking in overall flavour but hers was better value at £10 where mine was below average at £16.50. This is where I got annoyed. I received the dessert menu, which was very disappointing with only a few semi interesting items that I could choose from so I made my decision and waited and waited for 20 minutes until finally two other waitresses pointed at us and one came over. By this time I was so annoyed I just wanted to go. Of course getting the bill took a further 10 minutes as they had only one pdq card machine in the whole place and it was playing up. Overall I thought it was a lovely setting but average. Would I go back, maybe?

Sundowners (26 June 2008)

We turned up on a Wednesday evening and the welcome was good. The menu was limited and didn’t have ‘serious’ food like Gingerman’s. The food was tasty and the portions were okay but they were low on vegetables. The wine list was fairly pricey but it was good to see a local. The decor was a bit bland but I like the soft chairs. All considered, it was a pleasant evening and a ‘may be’ for the future.
