Glass House Restaurant Description

One of the largest restaurants in the Lake District, this is a busy, bustling place with the action taking place on three levels, including a mezzanine floor. For such big premises it really is quite an achievement to provide consistent good quality Modern European food, which appeals not just to tourists but the locals as well.

They also tailor what they offer quite cleverly from the Lite Bites at lunchtime like Cumberland sausage with mash potato and pickled red cabbage or tagliatelle with smoked chicken, blue cheese and walnuts, to an early evening menu offering exceptional value, and finally the full 'a la carte'.

The choice on that could include: crispy duck salad with watercress and coriander or taleggio and pomegranate risotto to start, followed by marinated seared fillet of salmon with deep fried celeriac and cumin sweet potato, lemongrass and lime dressing; braised Herdwick lamb with gratin dauphinoise or roast breast of Lakeland chicken, walnut cous-cous and basil cream.

Not only is the menu interesting, but so is the wine list, with most of the choices under £20 a bottle, presenting excellent value for money. No children under 5 years.

Fixed Dinner

  • £12.50 (2 courses) to £15 (3 courses), 6.30 - 7.30 pm

Your Reviews of Glass House Restaurant

Nisha (18 May 2008)

My boyfriend and I went to the Glass House Restaurant after a recommendation from a friend. We have to say that we were not disappointed. I had the scallops for starters and they were definitely the best I’ve ever had. For mains, my boyfriend opted for the lamb whilst I went for the leg of duck confit with Cumberland stuffing. The portions were very large but we still gave it a go. After being totally stuffed we couldn’t resist a dessert and shared the lemon tart. The food was excellent and the service was attentive but not intrusive. The atmosphere was romantic and we will definitely go again.

I went to the lakes and the passed the Glass House enroute to a restaurant. When another place in the area did not work, I though I would give Glass House Restaurant a go and I am glad I did. The premise is set in an old watermill - used as the name suggests, as a glass factory.

I had partridge for starters and I think I made a mistake, as it was slightly over cooked, dry and the sauce was a bit too sour for my taste. My partner had the Gaelic king prawns - which I tasted and have to say were lovely. We selected lamb for the main course. Having eaten at some Manchester and Liverpool restaurants, we decided to get some extra vegetables. When the lamb arrived, it was cooked to perfection. It melted in the mouth and was enough to feed two people with plenty of vegetables. I have to say, both of us enjoyed our meal and it was the best lamb I have had, compared to many top restaurants. Moving to service – it is good and non-intrusive. Waiters do not stand around to rush your plates off the table. I will certainly be making a trip to see Neil and his team again.
