Goods Shed Description

Well here's something new. The Goods Shed is home to an ongoing and brilliantly stocked base for growers and producers in Kent who retail directly to the public. The main result of all this is that you have a wonderful array of produce that is traceable, sometimes organic, and wholesome. Another is that enterprising souls have set up a restaurant within the complex, which is completely under cover, offering lunch and dinner from £4 to £14, using, natch, mainly produce from the traders in the market. The effect of this is to be confronted by an array of usually simple dishes that would satisfy even the twitchiest seeker after honest excellence, as well as being a good shop window for the products themselves. Shop and eat here with slow proved oven baked bread, smoked meats and fish, wicked cakes from Woodys Goodies, hand reared free range meats, fresh laid eggs straight from the range, home made fudge, dark chocolate, and monster doorstep sandwiches from Johnny Sandwich. You'll be spoiled rotten for choice!

We moved down to Canterbury from London a couple of years ago. We'd done our research and eaten at Goods Shed and I must say it was a great incentive to make the move! It's the only restaurant in Canterbury to appear in the Good Food Guide and the quality is impeccable. The options are not many, although six starters and six mains aren't bad, but the main point is that ninety five percent of the ingredients are sourced from the farmer's market that takes up most of the Shed's space.

I believe the whole experience is life enhancing and the food is good. You could try the house wines - they're excellent. I strongly recommend this place.

We ate at the Goods Shed on a sunny Saturday lunchtime. The market was bustling and we could see trains going past us from the window. The Shed itself is a large, airy, open space filled with fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, etc. and people - perfect atmosphere. I was slightly surprised by the limited menu - only about six or seven choices each for starters and mains, and no desserts. There was a good selection of drinks, my friend had a beautiful organic apple juice, and I had a nice fresh green tea. I ordered the baked egg and asparagus and when it arrived, it was perfectly cooked and looked gorgeous. We were given a platter of fresh baked bread with butter, which kept my companion happy as well. For mains, my companion ordered the pot roast chicken and this looked superb - like something cooked for a medieval baron. Succulent chicken that had a gentle beige colour and it came with a simply cooked roast and boiled vegetables in a light gravy. I ordered the fish pie, which came with mustard greens. The pie had a beautiful smoky flavour, and was crammed with fish and fresh vegetables, with a lovely cheese mash on top. I think it was the best fish pie I’ve ever eaten. Because we had no alcohol, our bill was a reasonable £40 between us. I’d recommend the Goods Shed because the cooking was second to none.
