Goods Shed Description
Well here's something new. The Goods Shed is home to an ongoing and brilliantly stocked base for growers and producers in Kent who retail directly to the public. The main result of all this is that you have a wonderful array of produce that is traceable, sometimes organic, and wholesome. Another is that enterprising souls have set up a restaurant within the complex, which is completely under cover, offering lunch and dinner from £4 to £14, using, natch, mainly produce from the traders in the market. The effect of this is to be confronted by an array of usually simple dishes that would satisfy even the twitchiest seeker after honest excellence, as well as being a good shop window for the products themselves. Shop and eat here with slow proved oven baked bread, smoked meats and fish, wicked cakes from Woodys Goodies, hand reared free range meats, fresh laid eggs straight from the range, home made fudge, dark chocolate, and monster doorstep sandwiches from Johnny Sandwich. You'll be spoiled rotten for choice!

On the recommendation of my good friend, Philip Carter, I decided to celebrate my 33rd wedding anniversary at the Goods Shed, and I was pleasantly surprised. It was one of the coldest nights that I have ever experienced in the UK - minus 7, I believe - but the atmosphere and food warmed the cockles of my heart. I liked the spacious setup, and what really impressed me was the fact that there was no background music, which meant that my wife and I could have a conversation without having to raise our voices to be heard by our neighbours. The tables were spaced adequately, and the rustic ambience perfected the atmosphere. The homemade bread was a good appetiser, as was the local ale. The scallop starter was superb - served exactly the way I like it, not overcooked, and smacking of the sea. My wife's hake was excellent - succulent and tender, and my rib-eye steak was perfect to the last bit. The Goods Shed has definitely not seen the last of me, and I can recommend it to anyone.

We moved down to Canterbury from London a couple of years ago. We'd done our research and eaten at Goods Shed and I must say it was a great incentive to make the move! It's the only restaurant in Canterbury to appear in the Good Food Guide and the quality is impeccable. The options are not many, although six starters and six mains aren't bad, but the main point is that ninety five percent of the ingredients are sourced from the farmer's market that takes up most of the Shed's space.
I believe the whole experience is life enhancing and the food is good. You could try the house wines - they're excellent. I strongly recommend this place.
