Green Park Brasserie and Bar Description
Marvellous what you can do with a redundant railway station, and here in Bath the former booking hall of Green Park Station has been transformed into spacious, and gracious surroundings, full of light and style, without being in any way twee.
A strong dedication to jazz runs through the restaurant with duos on Wednesday evenings, and trios and quartets on Fridays and Saturdays, when diners have seating preference, though there is no lack of seats in the overflow areas. All this and plenty of free parking right alongside beneath the vaulted arch of the station roof, and it is little wonder that "The Braz" is one of the hottest numbers in town.
And that's before we even take a look at the food and drink. Best value of the lot is the three-course early diner offer of three courses for £9.95, provided you order before 7pm, Tuesday to Friday, and on Saturday evenings before 6.30pm.
The menu selection could include roast vine tomatoes on a garlic ciabatta with balsamic vinegar and pecorino cheese, a chargilled 8oz rump steak, served plain or with green chilli and tomato butter, or chermoula spiced chicken breast served with Tzatziki, followed by caramelised banana and rum tatin with coconut ice cream.
In the bar you will encounter the locally renowned Butcombe beer, as well as San Miguel and some of the best bottled beers. A good selection of wine at attractive prices draws mainly on the New World.
The a la carte evening menu offers an exciting range of dishes that changes regularly, but expect to find such beautifully prepared offerings as seared yellow fin tuna on a bed of green beans and rocket with a soy and lime dressing. The Gorgonzola, chervil and leek tart with salad makes a zingy introduction to any meal. A main course of baked salmon, red pepper and tomato fishcakes is served with a dill and lemon mayonnaise.
For many the inclusion of duck on the menu is an imperative and The Brazz does the honours in style with roast breast finished with a honey, ginger and wholegrain mustard glaze.
Marshfield Farm ice creams are big in the best West Country restaurants; here they come in flavours that include blackberry, toffee fudge, vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. A more elaborate approach is lavished upon a white and dark Belgian chocolate parfait, or a splendid chocolate bread and butter pudding.
A daily lunch menu, Monday to Saturday, offers a short but attractive menu to those who want dishes that satisfy rather than stultify, including eggs Benedict, 3 egg omelette and a grilled minute steak.
There is an Internet Café in the old Station library, a welcome touch of modernity in a city that justifiably lays claim to some of the finest architecture in Britain and was a great favourite with the Romans, who knew a good thing when they saw it. All in all The Braz has to be one of the best things that has happened to modern Bath.
