Greyhound at Battersea, The Description
Although the Greyhound claims to be a gastropub, very few of the people who eat there seem to agree with that definition - the general view is that it's miles better than a gastropub, more a good restaurant sited in a former pub. Let's hope this does not offend the proprietor, Mark van der Goot. Mark is a sommelier by trade so it comes as no surprise to find a wine list that is quite remarkably good.
The menu is perfectly simple, three choices in each course, changing regularly. Starters embrace smoked haddock and mushroom soup topped with a fried quail's egg. For main courses some very tasty mutton seems to please, and a Cornish monkfish carpaccio with avocado, fried calamari and sesame dressing appears as a regular. A touch of Blumenthal crops up with the mango salad and horseradish ice cream, but relief is at hand for the more conventional with a chocolate marquis accompanied by Hoegaarden ice cream and rice crispy biscuit.
Maybe The Greyhound should forget the gastropub label, which I suspect is not going to stand the test of time and become proud to be a restaurant - and a very good one at that - notable not only for its food, but exceptionally fine wine to boot.

Your Reviews of Greyhound at Battersea, The

I was intrigued to read Libby Hammond’s comments about a 50th birthday party, and feel compelled to write this. I had my 50th birthday lunch at the Greyhound in May, and was served the same starter which was excellent, followed by roast beef, which no one could fault. I had a group of fifty five friends attending the lunch, and without exception, everybody raved about the food, the service, and I can only say that the Greyhound did me proud. Led by Sam and his team!

We booked the private room for a surprise 50th based on having sampled the restaurant. It was really disappointing. One superb waiter tried to serve 14 people and the starter (rocket and smoked salmon) just ended up dolloped on plates. The pre-ordered mutton turned out to be ostrich, and the sea bream wasn't cooked properly - more like sushi than poached sea bream. No jus or presentation to any of the dishes. It would have been fantastic if the private room food had been given the same attention as that served in the restaurant.
