Greyhound Inn at Stockbridge, The Description

Stockbridge, reputed to be the Holy Grail of those who fish on god's own river, the Test, harbours a number of other distractions amongst which The Greyhound is by no means the least. However, one has the distinct feeling that the level of gastronomy is pitched more towards the informal London weekend crowd than your humble disciples of Isaac Walton. Not that there is anything intrinsically wrong with that, as many a fisherman would testify. The local produce is called well into play and a signature dish is the starter of fishcake, graced with a poached egg and chive beurre blanc. The beef is well regarded and a favoured version comes with seared foie gras, herbed pomme puree and a port and lentil jus.

It is good to see The Greyhound restored to some sort of glory, though sad that it has not integrated more into the community. But business is business and there is little doubt that it has set its own sights and is keeping them happy. The wine list represents clear thinking on somebody's part, with some pretty scary prices at the top end coupled with some relief, mainly from South America. The Greyhound is proud of its modest sherry collection, all at under £3 a glass.

Your Reviews of Greyhound Inn at Stockbridge, The

Simon (16 June 2008)

We went to the Greyhound in April for a mid week lunch. It was well recommended and we tried it as an alternative to our usual haunt. The greeting can best be described as frosty and the atmosphere a bit worn and chilly. The menu promised much, but delivered below par. The rare steak was okay but very medium and my partner’s fish was again overcooked. We did mention this in passing but got no apology or comment other than ‘that's the way it comes’. This was an expensive meal and not worth a visit – sorry.

Jacque Briand-Cirac (9 July 2007)

I was there last week with friends, and it was fantastic. The chef has certainly put a lot of thinking in creating those dishes with some excellent sauces, and it was very good. The cheese was served at the table on a wooden tray (original, I like that) with excellent chutney and very good choices of fresh bread. As a French man I like my wine and the wine list have impressed me. The pleasant waitress knew a lot about the wine on the list and I like that very much. The service was excellent. The peaceful walk in the garden along the river was a great end off to a fantastic and enjoyable meal. I would recommend the restaurant with no doubt.
