GT's Omelette Restaurant

11-12 Albion Street, Kingston-upon-Hull, HU1 3TD

In 1964 Mario Tambaros rented a retail unit on Albion Street in Hull. This unit became a Coffee House and Restaurant called The Omelette. After a few years he took over the neighbouring unit and opened "The House of Kebab". During the next few years the two units were combined to create one restaurant. After about 20 years of business Mr. Tambaros decided to sell the restaurant and moved to Brighton to open a Hotel. In December 1988 On a visit from Brighton to his in-laws George Tambaros (Mario's son) decided to go to the old haunt for a meal. Devastated to find the Restaurant closed and also looking for a business at the time George and his wife Tracey decided to buy the restaurant back.

With an aim to make good food available to a wide range of people, George was keen to open a restaurant in the city and after 3 month's renovations the restaurant re-opened as The Omelette. After 9 years successful trading the restaurant closed for 2 weeks. It was totally refurbished and renamed GT's.

George and Tracey both felt that the name should be changed to help keep up with modern expectations and to try and emphasise that more than omelettes were available.

The name change however was not well received. Regular customers refused to accept it as did the suppliers. The phone was answered "GT's Restaurant" and people would ask, "Is that The Omelette?" So, knowing that people were not happy with the name it has been updated to GT's Omelette Restaurant.

Clearly omelettes are their speciality, with some really unusual examples, like: Indian - chopped chicken, sautéed onions, chopped pimentos and garlic with a hint of ground cumin; Italian - minced Lamb, tomatoes and onions and a hint of oregano; Kiev - chopped chicken garlic and parsley, or Mexican - minced lamb, sautéed onions, red kidney beans, chilli powder and chopped tomatoes.

However, they also do great fresh fish and chips, from haddock to swordfish or tuna, and are everything that a family orientated neighbourhood restaurant should be.
