Gusto - Newcastle

The Quayside, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, NE1 3DX

As soon as you walk through the doors of a Gusto outlet, you should instantly feel welcome. They are a chain of modern restaurants that offer a dining experience based on good food, drink and service in stylish surroundings. Their name stands for a hearty and enjoyable dining experience. The ambiance is influenced by the glamour of 1950's New York Italian eateries, but in a contemporary setting, with a focus on freshly prepared classic and modern Italian fare; there is a stand-alone bar along side the restaurants, and a range of wines, beers, spirits and cocktails. Among starters, expect to find the classics calamari and caprese salad, as well as seared and marinated beef carpaccio. The restauarant also has an extensive choice of pizzas including all the old favourites such as the Margherita, Carnivore and Fiorentina.

The menu has a range of delicious dishes including whole lobster, salt baked sea bass and homemade Italian beef burger - all added to a range of specials created by the chef each week. Of course, being an Italian restaurant they serve an excellent selection of pasta, piled hot and steaming into large bowls - perfect for lunch or early evening with a crisp side salad like the apple, gorgonzola, walnut with baby gem and spinach. Ingredients are sourced responsibly both on land and at sea, seeking out local suppliers wherever possible.

Children are particularly well catered for at Gusto. The menu is varied and even encourages participation, for instance they can create pizzas with their own choice of toppings and take them down to the kitchen themselves.

The dessert list comprises of chocolate and marscapone calzone, a local favourite, and tiramisu among other choices for those wanting to indulge their sweet tooth. Along with champagne and prosecco, Gusto also serves old and new world wines.

REVIEWS OF Gusto - Newcastle

Alys Lodge (4 August 2011)

Visited the restaurant on a Wednesday evening with a group friends, all with little people in tow. At first a little worried that the restaurant wouldn't be child friendly as it was very elegant inside however immediately put at ease my our waitress who fussed over the children, seated us at a gorgeous booth. All thoroughly enjoyed our meals, my warm scallop salad was absolutely delightful although I was quite jealous of my friends Caprino pizza with goats cheese roasted peppers and pine nuts. The kids all loved there chefs hats and making their own pizzas.

Overall we had a brilliant time...and will definitely return. Food, atmosphere and service were fantastic with great views of the Quayside.

My husband and I were walking along the quayside having a look at the Sunday market and decided we'd get something to eat. Gusto's massive bumbling terrace caught our eye. There were only a few tables left available in the sunshine, but we were greeted with a friendly smile from the manager who sat us down with some menus. We ordered garlic bread and couldn't decide whether to have plain, tomato or mozzarella. The charming and very handsome young waiter, suggested we have a 'half and half', which we were overjoyed with! We followed with a tagliatelle with chilli and prawns and a rib eye steak which were to die for. Our waiter - I think he was called Max - suggested these fantastic courgette fries which were like chips made out of courgettes, a fabulous idea and they tasted gorgeous. All in all, the setting, service and food were impeccable. We will definitely be returning again and hope to become one of the restaurant’s regulars for years to come.
