Haldanes Restaurant
Albany Hotel, 39a Albany Street, Edinburgh, EH1 3QY
If your definition of dining out is the sort of tranquillity envisaged by Professor Higgins in My Fair Lady, with the added benefit of the company of ladies, then Haldanes with two AA rosettes is your place. Elegant and intimate, it provides relaxed surroundings for the serving of Scottish fare with a modern twist. A glazed tartlet of Shetland crab and oak smoked salmon make a good starter. The Highland venison, in whatever form presented, is properly hung and truly delicious, and the caramelised lemon tarts do justice to the surroundings. Since this is Scotland, you could expect nothing less than some of that gloriously creamy fudge, called 'tablet' in the land of the kilt, with perfectly brewed coffee. If your definition of dining out is the sort of tranquillity envisaged by Professor Higgins in My Fair Lady, with the added benefit of the company of ladies, then Haldanes with two AA rosettes is your place. REVIEWS OF Haldanes Restaurant
Shune (16 May 2009)
My husband and I ate there last night and it was absolutely fantastic. Hidden away downstairs at the Albany Hotel, this is a real secret gem worth going to. Shaun was blown away by the rabbit ballotine starter and I had haggis bon bons. Feather blade of beef was melt in the mouth, so tasty, and loin of pork was superb. Unfortunately, we could not do justice to a pudding - too full, but I'm sure they would be every bit as good as the rest. The service was second to none. I cannot rate this place highly enough. It certainly was not expensive for the quality and standard received. 10/10.

Haldanes has to be one of the top visits in Edinburgh. It’s right up there with the Edinburgh Castle and Hogmanay. The range of food is pleasantly varied and obviously well thought out. I went for the scallops on a bed of salad and having tasted it, I would instantly recommend it to anyone else who happens to frequent this gem of a restaurant. The main was a tasty set of prime Scotch beef. It was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavours, this is definitely something to be enjoyed slowly with a glass of fine wine. The selection of wines is surprisingly astonishing. With over thousand wines on the menu there is something for every palate, although when we were there, there seemed to be a number of them out of stock but then it is only a medium restaurant. Following that was a course of lemon tart, and a lovely dark chocolate marquise, which was absolutely divine. The staff were very friendly too. They really couldn't do enough for us. Lastly, a fine dram of whisky, I suggest the lagavulin to finish the evening. This is definitely one of the finest restaurants I have been to and if you are in Edinburgh at least once in your life you certainly must visit this little cosy cove. You will not regret it.
