Half Moon

Cuxham, nr Watlington, OX49 5NF

The Half Moon is an old, thatched Pub in the heart of rural Oxfordshire. Inside, amongst old beams, original red and black floor tiling and Edwardian tables and chairs, lies modernity in the guise of Eilidh Ferguson and Andrew Hill, the new landlords, whose warm welcome and superb food have brought more than a sign of life back to this aged, idyllic spot. In fact, the place is positively reborn. The twice-daily changing blackboard offers homemade, seasonal produce, locally sourced whenever possible. Andrew's menu has caught today's foodie mood perfectly. The ever changing menu which makes life for the visitor, or regular, much more interesting. Chance by on the day they have their version of potted crab, please order it.

Andrew's menu has caught today's foodie mood perfectly. The ever changing menu which makes life for the visitor, or regular, much more interesting. Chance by on the day they have their version of potted crab, please order it. I'll say no more. I'm also a crispy duck nut and combining it with his version of Caesar salad proved to be a quite exceptional dish. I've also tried his fish pie and if you're with some friends ask for the mixed starter dish. It's not only beautiful to look at but truly delicious with lots of variety.

Typically, you should find dishes such as; bouillabaisse or roast hake, leek and cheddar quiche or confit pork belly with sage mash, apples and onions. There always a good cross section of dishes and Andrew goes for quality not quantity and all their fresh produce comes from the vegetable garden that bolts on to their large summer garden.

Puddings have a separate, smaller board and, yes, all homemade and will finish you off! Count on about £20 per person (without wine and tip) but just enjoy the warm atmosphere and pleasant surroundings.

REVIEWS OF Half Moon

Nick Edgar (9 April 2008)

The food I would say could be described in three words – fresh, simple and delicious. We arrived at 1.30pm and received a warm welcome and the atmosphere was so relaxed you could have been mistaken for going to your parent’s house for Sunday lunch. The staff were obviously run of their feet but you would never have known, as they made time for me and my partner as soon as we walked in. We choose our drinks from the wide range they offered and indulged in a few tit-bits such as pork scratchings, marinated olives and homemade crisps. We were then shown to our table and the menu is presented in a blackboard form that is transported around the restaurant to each individual table and explained without having to feel like you are annoying the staff. I decided on the red mullet escabeche followed by the steak, chips and béarnaise. My partner decided on the celeariac and truffle soup followed by the smoked haddock, poached egg and wholegrain mustard sauce. The flavours were strong, vibrant yet very refreshing, a simple dish yet so pleasing. Next came our main courses, my partner chose haddock which was cooked perfectly. My steak was cooked to a lovely rare stage but was nice and warm, the chips were crispy yet fluffy and the béarnaise was a dream. We decided on dessert, my partner had the sticky toffee pudding and I had a chocolate and banana tart with white chocolate ice cream which was tasty.

Simplicity is great when done properly and they do this well. The food is very tasty and the place is a must visit for all.
