Hatton Arms, The

Until recently a slightly moribund pub where strangers were subjected to a searching scrutiny throughout the period of their impudence in visiting the locals' pub, The Hatton Arms has had a swift transformation and can now be added to that distinguished list of 'country inns with food' within 20 miles of Stamford. And worry not, the local search squad has evaporated or reformed.

Carl and Lisa Butler, along with their Head Chef, Shaun Williams, are well fitted to making a success of this attractive inn that bears the name and coat of arms of the Hattons of nearby Kirby Hall, a jewel in the crown of English Heritage.

And talking of distinguished lists let's say it for the local suppliers, Baines Bakery in Uppingham, Grasmere Farm pork and sausages, Bates Butchers from  Market Harborough, all have combined with others to supply nothing but the best of local produce which Shaun transforms into his "traditional home cooking with an a la carte twist".

An evening menu homes in on the traditional dishes, not least the succulent beef steaks, of Northamptonshire. Lunch time offers two or three course options from a weekly changing menu and the bar snacks are incredibly good value. Even the children are not forgotten with all main courses available at £3.50.

The former Gretton Silver Band practice room has been done up and is available for hire for parties from twelve to twenty, with or without food and drink.
