Hengist

7-9 High Street, Aylesford, nr Maidstone, ME20 7AX

Named after the first king of Kent, Hengist serves modern French cuisine in a stylish contemporary setting. Situated in the oldest village in Britain, it has a varied history dating from fifteen hundred and sixty. Proprietors Paul Smith, Kevin James and chef Richard Phillips have carefully nurtured the dining experience by renovating this building to provide an atmosphere of warm elegance. A stately entrance welcomes guests and is complemented by the cosy intimacy of the main dining hall and the charm of the individual private dining areas - the crystal room and the Japanese room. Chicken liver parfait with cured ham accompanied by homemade piccalilli, marinated celeriac with grain mustard, grilled garlic ciabatta followed by a roast rump of new season 'Romney Marsh' lamb are good picks among the starters and the mains.

REVIEWS OF Hengist

Bob Yule (13 February 2011)

We were very impressed with this restaurant. The service was courteous and friendly, and the food in all three courses was superb. Definitely recommended.

Nic (17 August 2010)

My partner and I would happily walk barefoot to dine here. The food is stunning and the service is attentive without being overbearing. Attention to detail is the hallmark. One of the most pleasing things from a service point of view is the space given between courses - not too much that you find yourself looking at your watch, and not too little that you don't have time to digest what must be in anyone's book some of the finest cooking in the county.
