Hing Loon

I've been going to the Hing Loon for the past eight years and it has served consistently good food at a very reasonable price. Crispy duck has to be a winner for two to share at a mere £6.50 (2006). Main dishes, as others have noted, are great value if you opt for those at the back of the menu with rice/noodles. Friends often over order expecting meagre portions, but this is never the case! They're also surprised that in central London it works out substantially cheaper and fresher than from where they hail. Service is great particularly from the bloke who works there - he may be the owner, he seems to genuinely care and gives good ordering advice. The women are a bit more hit and miss to be honest - after 8 years of going at least once a week, you'd think they'd recognise me. I still get told where the toilet is (upstairs)... makes me laugh.

A wonderful restaurant to visit with friends, the Hing Loon may not have all the atmosphere that you could ask for, but the food is very good and great value for money. I recommend the hotpots: substantial dishes that would defeat the lone diner, with such tantalising choices as piquant aubergine and salt fish and the rich and comforting eel and pork. The menu is wide-ranging and a delicious read and offers a good choice for the vegetarian. Overall, a real gem in the heart of London.
