Hix Oyster & Fish House
Cobb Road, Lyme Regis, DT7 3JP
Hix Oyster & Fish House prefers to keep things simple, a small terrace on the upper deck with a wooden bar is the best spot to enjoy lobster and chips, whilst gazing out to sea. The first thing you notice is the spectacular sight of the Jurassic coastline, thanks to the floor to ceiling windows. For those who haven't managed to book a table upstairs do not fret over missing out on the visual delight. Enjoy a bit of theatre in the dining area downstairs with an open plan kitchen, enabling you to chat with the chefs as they go about their work. A blackboard of the day's landing and house specialities using fresh fish make up the menu, in addition to a variety of seasonal oysters. Dishes such as jellied skate with pea shoot salad, lemon sole with fennel tops and roasted hake with clams and samphire come to table with confident simplicity.Hix Oyster & Fish House prefers to keep things simple, a small terrace on the upper deck with a wooden bar is the best spot to enjoy lobster and chips, whilst gazing out to sea. REVIEWS OF Hix Oyster & Fish House
Moon dancer (29 September 2008)
Hix Oyster and Fish House is the latest of Mark Hix's ventures, and by far the most scenic. Perched high above the Cob at Lyme Regis, looking out over a millpond calm sea as the sun sets, it just makes you crave fish; luckily that's exactly what you get. As we enter the clean, small upper dining area, Tamara greeted us with an informal and friendly 'No problem' to our apology for being half an hour early. A complimentary amuse of whole prawns, garlic mayo and sour dough bread set the tone. Get your fingers in and get peeling. Starters, thank god, are not precarious towers threatening to topple into the splashes of jus but simple, beautiful and perfectly cooked. My sea salad at £10.95 was complete with local oyster, the first I have ever genuinely enjoyed, carpet shell clams, crab, soft mussels and samphire. My other half tucked into spider crab at £17.45 with warm buttered toast, the most expensive starter on the menu but in her humble opinion was well worth it. The joint main course of a mixed grilled fish for two at £46.50, is a seriously eclectic piscine mix, one whole and beautiful John Dory with two whole, soft and sweet scallops, two grilled, creamy lobster, half of it unfortunately was a little dry, and sea bream, a large steak, meaty and delicious, was the star of the show. It was more than enough for two to share; the side of buttered runner beans with mint is a definite must. To finish the obligatory chocolate mousse for her, the look on her face said it all; and a real pudding for me, sweet and sticky plum crumble and thick custard. A really satisfying and above all delicious meal, for the grand total of £120.00, inclusive of drinks and a 12.5% discretionary service charge, was well worth it. The service was exemplary. Give it a go and you won't be disappointed.

What a great place with great views and delicious food. This is a great new addition to Lyme Regis, a lovely little restaurant overlooking the harbour, on a clear day you can see for miles. We sat outside, there is only bar seating available outside since it was just the two of us, it was perfect as we gazed at sea and enjoyed delicious oysters and smoked salmon, that is apparently smoked on the premises - it was delicious and certainly smoky. We also had simple mixed fish for two and then a perry jelly to share for dessert. It was just so refreshing to sit and enjoy uncomplicated food in such a nice setting and a rare thing to come by in the South West.
