Hotel du Vin - Birmingham Church St
25 Church Street, Birmingham, B3 2NR
We hear a great deal about recycling these days - du Vin recycles attractive but occasionally un-loved buildings to restore real gems in the best tradition of British understated style. Complement that with all that is best in the French bistro ethos, bars that reach out to please, and you have a setting that provides an inspirational background for people to meet, do business, get married, provide a base for golf or fishing, somewhere you can call your own for a private celebration, a spa or - most engagingly - a wine school that breaks the mould. In Birmingham du Vin has taken on the former Birmingham Eye Hospital, a handsome building in the best style of Victorian public buildings, strategically placed in the newly revitalised Jewellery Quarter, but close enough to the city centre to make a liver-livening stroll in the morning a real pleasure. We hear a great deal about recycling these days - du Vin recycles attractive but occasionally un-loved buildings to restore real gems in the best tradition of British understated style.

Equipped with a spa and gym, the hotel has 66 bedrooms and boutique sites round a central courtyard that is blessed with many of the building's striking original features, including the grand sweeping staircase and granite pillars. Every room has handsprung mattresses, fine Egyptian linen, deep baths, power showers and high speed wireless internet access.
In the classy bistro a choice of six starters could include lamb's kidneys and wild mushrooms on toast with mustard crème, Serrano ham and celeriac remoulade, or Uig Lodge smoked salmon and traditional garnish. Tournedos Rossini remains one of the great dishes of all time, served with garlic roast potatoes and red wine jus. Poached smoked haddock is served with bacon and pea risotto, crispy leeks and chive veloute.
Whilst one might argue that the whole point of being in a du Vin is to snuggle up to the wine list, this list is designed to march with the food and can only be described as superb. With a team of four sommeliers, headed here by François Bourde, there is no room for anything but the best. Service is telepathic in the best possible sense.

REVIEWS OF Hotel du Vin - Birmingham Church St
Kadi (15 December 2009)
Arrived at Hotel Du Vin on a Friday night, we were lucky and found a parking space right outside, which is extremely unusual around there. The hotel looked superb; it was beautifully decorated with friendly staff ready to greet you. The restaurant was full, luckily we had booked two weeks in advance and the decor was extremely French as you’d expect. For starters we had a goat's cheese, beetroot, walnut and mixed leaf salad and a red onion, rocket and mixed cheese tart, petite salad. They arrived about 20 minutes after ordering. The goat's cheese was cooked just right with the salad was simple with thin strands of beetroot for colour and flavour. For main we had a char grilled rib-eye steak, slow roast tomatoes, snail and garlic butter, hand cut chips and a pan fried sea bass with crushed puree of summer peas, brown shrimps, and tomato and herb beurre blanc. They arrived about 25 minutes after we had finished our starters. The steak came out on a wooden board and was cooked perfectly how I asked for it – medium, and tasted perfect, the hand cut chips were served in a paper cone. Presentation wise it looked good apart from the fries! The sea bass was a good size, very moist and tasted fresh, shrimps were good and the puree of summer peas were surprisingly very tasty for peas, presentation was good.
For dessert we had two crème brûlées. You can’t really go wrong with a crème brulee unless you burn the sugar, and they didn’t, it tasted divine, and it was huge, one brulee would easily be substantial enough for one, although we ate them both with ease. For wine we had the Balfour Brut Rose at £49 which was light and fruity. The wine waiter was extremely knowledgeable and polite. Overall the service, food and the atmosphere was very good, no complaints.
