Howies - Victoria Description

Howies doesn't fit into the category of a chain because each of its restaurants has an individualistic style, décor and menu. But the underlying commitment to offering remarkable dishes in a relaxed and casual environment is consistently present in all of them. Howies in Victoria Street is situated in the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town and its proximity to the registry office makes it the ideal spot for wedding day celebrations. Dim lighting lends a classical elegance that matches the dark wood furnishings tastefully.

The menu changes monthly and focuses on using local suppliers for all their ingredients. From amongst the starters you could choose the warm crab, dill and spinach tart with a caper dressing and move on to a main course of salmon en croute with buttered new potatoes, broccoli florets, parsley and lemon cream. End with the homemade shortbread and chocolate mousse tower with Chantilly cream and raspberry coulis and finally a cup of Irish coffee or an after dinner liqueur.

Fixed Lunch

  • £7.95 (2 courses) to £9.95 (3 courses)

Fixed Dinner

  • £15 (2 courses + a glass of wine/bottle of beer)

Your Reviews of Howies - Victoria

Haley (29 March 2008)

We ate at Howies last week as it seemed to be a nice restaurant with quality food. This was true for the first course, but the steak we ordered was not as advertised - it was thin, fatty and full of gristle. We attempted to eat what we could as we don't usually like to complain - it ruins a good night out. However, when we got to the point of not being able to cut or chew the steak we pointed the problem out to our waitress. She took it back to the chef who said there was nothing wrong with the steak. They refused to reduce the price of our meal and we were very disappointed with the service.

We walked past this restaurant several times before we ate there and the smells coming out were always wonderful! We ate there because of the "Eat Scotland" logo which seems to be a good guide to a decent meal. We had the two course special (about £17 each) and chose to have the main and the pudding...there was a small but tempting selection for each course and the menu changes each month apparently. It was one of the best meals we had during our holiday. My chargrilled asparagus with rosemary polenta was lovely and the banoffee pie was great too. We would definitely eat here again.
