Hunan

51 Pimlico Road, London, SW1W 8NE

Hunan is not only the name of this restaurant but also the name of a Chinese province known for is spicy cuisine and this is definitely the best restaurant in London to experience this style of food. The restaurant is run by Mr Peng, who has a reputation for deciding what customers would like to eat, so many diners find it wise to simply run with his choice at a cost of £28 a head, that gives you a variety of some of the best dishes on offer.

REVIEWS OF Hunan

Fabulous! One of the best ever restaurant meals I've had in my life. There were people queuing up at the door to get in on a Monday night - you definitely need to book. I love that there is no set menu – instead, there is rolling delivery of small plates and small bites. They consult with you at the beginning of the meal to check what you do and don't eat and whether you like hot, medium or mild spice, etc. The service was unobtrusive, impeccable and faultless. Only two dishes on the table at once, so table doesn't get overcrowded. It's like tapas style, but each dish is just one or two bites, so although we ended up trying maybe fifteen different dishes, we didn't feel over-full at the end. They also judged well when we needed to have a small rest. Another highlight was the beautiful low tannin wine that the Manager / Owner Michael Peng recommended to us. The wine list was impressive, and even lists over ten varieties of 'Noble Rot' wines - very high end indeed. Wine started from £16 and went up from there, so there is a bottle to suit every budget. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. It is mind blowing and good from every aspect.

Hunan fan (25 June 2008)

We've eaten at Hunan numerous times. It's not fancy or pretentious and the food is some of the best Chinese we've eaten. We like the fact that a menu is not required, although one exists. Just sit down and enjoy each plate that arrives. It's a family run business and Mr Peng takes time to go around to the tables for a quick chat. They will keep bringing you courses until you say stop. We recommend the crispy duck. Hunan is definitely a restaurant where quality and value are in proportion. I suggest you make a booking at weekends.
