Hurdles, The Description

If the thought of a charming Victorian pub conjures images of wood panelling, oak beams and an old world feel, then think again as The Hurdles' interior speaks of opulent style and design without negating the charm factor. Even the location can't come better than this, a picturesque Meon valley setting in the village of Droxford.

On the menu classic bar staples are juxtaposed with modern British favourites, so expect to find battered fish of the day and chips alongside crispy duck leg with merguez sausages, apple and bean cassoulet and mash. Cod and prawn fishcakes are closely challenged by the likes of free range coq au vin with dauphinoise potatoes and red cabbage. Desserts are quite conventional with the sticky toffee pudding and Bailey's bread and butter pudding with white chocolate featuring prominently.

If gourmet evenings interest you then watch out for this monthly event and treat yourself to a delicious five courses with wine to complement.

Your Reviews of Hurdles, The

Sue B (21 February 2009)

We were looking for somewhere new and decided to try The Hurdles based on the entry and customer review on restaurant-guide.com. We were so impressed with the food, the décor and the prompt and friendly service that this is likely to become our new favourite place for eating out. Among the starters was a sweet potato and duck hashcake served with a poached egg and butter sauce - a fabulous blend of flavours. The beef bourguignon was meltingly tender and full of rich flavours. We were so full we sadly had to skip dessert but even the coffee, often a disappointment in pub-restaurants, was delicious at The Hurdles. This place is a real gem.

Temirah (2 January 2008)

The Hurdles in Soberton offers smart dining in a relaxed country atmosphere. It’s easy to find on the B2153, off the A32 north of Droxford. You can view their menu on their website and it is helpful that the staff know the specifics of the dishes and direct you well. The restaurant also has tasty starters, light lunches and a good selection of wines at pub average prices too. The portions are just right and very tasty. The service was perfectly timed even on a busy Saturday evening just before Christmas. As the restaurant is disabled friendly and has plenty of parking space, so it makes sense to book in advance. This place is ideal for lunch at the weekend, especially if you are walking along the Meon Valley railway line.
