Imperial China

White Bear Yard, 25a Lisle Street, London, WC2H 7BA

Formerly China City, this Lisle Street restaurant has re-opened with a smart new look and a name to match; it is separated from the busy streets of Chinatown by a tranquil courtyard. Imperial China is a vast venue, set over three floors and prides itself on authentic cuisine, something it obviously achieves if the stream of Cantonese customers are anything to go by. The dim sum is both deliciously tasty as well as great value for money, while the varied menu ensures there is something for everyone. So for starters expect to find deep fried 'pon pon' prawns in sugar cane skewer, barbecue spare ribs or house hors d'oeuvres of vegetarian pancake rolls, spare ribs, sesame prawn toast and seaweed.

Main course dishes are not to be sidelined either with choices like roasted duck Cantonese style, sweet and sour pork with pineapple and fried bean curd in black bean sauce. The sweet flavour of water chestnuts comes through at dessert time in the form of a deep fried pudding in syrup.

REVIEWS OF Imperial China

Decor and welcome was very nice. That’s the where the positive part of this review ends. At 5 pm on Saturday night, we were the first to be seated on the first floor. Our order was taken and tap water given albeit grudgingly. Then the waiting started. We requested for prawn crackers, but they didn’t have those. Then we waited for the starters which finally arrived, for my husband and me. My daughter continued to wait for her soup. We shared the starter and requested the soup but nothing happened. We ordered Peking duck, which again does not appear. The soup arrives, and since my daughter was really hungry, she would have eaten anything. What really irked me was that people who have come in well after us, were getting their duck orders. When I asked about our order, there was no response. We decided that it was time to leave as I cannot stand service like this. Seems like a typical London rip off joint, targeted for tourists, forgetting that locals may find themselves wanting a nice meal now and again in the city centre. Avoid this place at all costs.

I recently organised a hen party in one of the private karaoke rooms at Imperial China. At first I was a little nervous having read some not so good reviews, but having had a brilliant time I wanted to put a good review up to counteract the less positive ones. The food was fantastic. This is some of the best Chinese food I have ever had. Vegetarians and any one with food allergies were very well looked after. There were two people less that night, and we were not charged for them, even though the small print says you will be. There was so much food left over that we felt bad so much of it went to waste. The house wine was very reasonable at £12.90 a bottle, and was good. All the empty bottles were left on a side table. I guess this was in case anyone wanted to question the bill at the end, but we felt no need to do so. The staff, and service were amazing, all were very attentive, and polite. At the end of the night though, they were a little quick in clearing the plates away and ushering us out. The place was very clean and plush. The karaoke was great, very modern, and easy to use. All the other rooms also seemed to be having as good a time as us. Our twenty-five strong hen party were very impressed, and no one had anything bad to say. We had the £27.50 set menu, and drank for at least four hours. The final bill came to £50 a head, which we all thought was very reasonable. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for any sort of party, and having eaten the food, I would say the a la carte menu was great, and we will certainly return for a meal.
