Indian Cavalry Club Description

Oh, land of great delight! Sorry, but I really do enjoy my Indian food and I can think of only one place where they possibly do it better, which for reasons of diplomacy I best not mention. Here at The Cavalry Club they go to great pains to reincarnate by means of gastronomy the spirit of the Raj. The linen is crisp, the hangings and the furnishings are evocative, the staff are deferential and in the uniform of the period and the food is just sublime. Any old buffers still around from that era should make the pilgrimage and enjoy a meal amidst sheer unashamed nostalgia, well camouflaged by dignity. Prices are impressively reasonable and the set price three course lunch at £6.95 must be amongst the best value in Edinburgh. House wine is £10.50 a bottle.

I recently attended the Indian Cavalry Club and it was great as always. An Edinburgh Institution much like Jenners. The new premises is lovely inside and the staff are always attentive and smiling. Great range and flair with the cooking makes for an enjoyable night. Prawn Dopiazi was great and I did not have to hunt for the prawns. My partners lamb dish was also really nice with good quality lamb that simply melts in your mouth.

Please carry on with this consistency!!

We went for an early meal before the theatre. Firstly the massive menu was most off-putting; choose a meat, choose a style of sauce, choose a flavour. There were pages and pages of offerings. The members of staff were unable to explain the menu to me. We were the only people in the place and watched a table of six and a table of two walk in and walk back out similarly perplexed by the menu. It always concerns me when a restaurant offers so much; how can it ever be freshly made? Eventually I ordered chicken jalfrezi and sag aloo, which arrived almost instantly. I can only assume they have vats of stuff they microwave to deal with such a huge menu. The food was flavourless and insipid and the single chicken portion cost over £13. The meal for two with two each of main dishes, side dishes, naan and beer was over £60. When the staff asked if I had enjoyed the meal, I told them I hadn't and they simply ignored my comment.
