Inn at Lathones, The Description
Five miles south of St Andrews, so do not be surprised to find a good quota of golfers joining you at this country inn with its wonderful atmosphere. Dining is either in the Steakout, or for our purposes, The Restaurant. Real care is taken over preparation and it shows. The fish and shellfish soup with croutons and grated Cairnsmore cheese is memorable, offering exactly the right run in to the Blackface lamb cutlets marinated in herb oils and grilled with fresh kidneys served with herb jus. For those not familiar - and for that matter those who are - with clootie dumpling, here is some of the best, served with fresh strawberry jam and whipped cream. We won't even talk about the thick chips cooked in beef dripping, or the incredible breakfast should circumstances conspire to ensure that you stay for the night. Excellent wine list with house wine at £10.50.
