Inn on the Lake, The Description
The Inn On The Lake has been a part of Godalming life since the 1930s. Initially a family run hotel, it has seen many changes over the years and has recently metamorphosed into a stylish country and dining pub. This has given it a contemporary feel and has brightened things up while retaining its focus on great food, warm service and a wonderful atmosphere.
The Inn now boasts a large but cosy bar area where you can feel at home on the comfy leather couches around several original open fire places. It serves a range of European lagers and real ales as well as a diverse wine list that will suit all tastes. No matter what your preference is, you should enjoy the warm welcome served with every round.
The wine list also offers a great range of champagnes to suit all tastes and pockets making it a great place for a celebration, birthday or anniversary. Treat yourself to a glass of bubbly to begin a wonderful evening there. The comfortable dining area has natural colour and luxurious furniture giving it an 'at home feel'. The décor is surpassed only by the new menu.
To set the right note of fashionable sociability there are sharing plates, a baked Camembert with rustic bread, Greek mezze with taramasalata with humus, tzatziki, feta and flatbread, or a pizzette with garlic, rocket and parmesan. Amongst the starters are baked French onion soup, smoked haddock with bubble and squeak with mustard hollandaise and devilled mushrooms on toast with pancetta.
The salads - sorry, that should read 'leaves' - offer dolce latte, honey roast pears, chicory and walnut salad and chicken Caesar with marinated anchovies and parmesan. These days no self-respecting gastropub can afford to be without its pizza and pasta range; expect to find tomato, mozzarella and basil or settle for macaroni with blue cheese and mushrooms or the risotto of the day. For the big event there are choices such as grilled lobster with garlic, parsley mayonnaise and frites, sole goujons, tartare sauce and frites or fish of the day.
The lamb burger, which has risen from the confines of fast food chains, carves a niche for itself on the menu and comes with minted Greek yoghurt and frites. A wide range of supporting dishes includes buttered new potatoes, Belgian frites and mayo, and greens, leeks and peas. For desserts, resort to the blackboard, where there is always a good display, often with some of the local cheeses to set the buffs alight. The gardens at the Inn On The Lake are one of the building's best features, offering seating for up to 200 with 120 people able to eat there.
Take advantage of the tranquil setting overlooking the water to enjoy a summer lunch or make use of the well lit, heated patio area for an evening out. The Inn is open all day making it a great setting to while away a summer afternoon with a few drinks. If you have more time on your hands than that or have driven any distance to visit Godalming then why not stay a night or two. The Inn On The Lake provides a number of en-suite bedrooms where on the outskirts of the quiet village you can't help but leave feeling fully rested!
The Inn On The Lake has always been a beautiful building with elegant features like the fireplaces and the garden. However, the recent re-launch has hit on the perfect combination of quality food, quality people and great décor to create somewhere it's a real pleasure to spend time at; why not find out more on their Website? Your Reviews of Inn on the Lake, The
Mervyn (29 January 2008)
The setting was excellent, food was good, and so was the decor. The only complaint that I have is the high level of background noise, which makes me hesitant to go there again.
Jim Hollands (25 October 2007)
We fancied a relaxed evening out after calling in for a drink a few nights before and being impressed with the atmosphere and décor we were warmly greeted and chose an excellent table for two. The service was warm and welcoming. This was the first night of their winter menu from which we chose the seared pigeon with beetroot and citrus orange salad which was excellent, and we were also offered breads with a balsamic vinegar and olive oil dip, a good touch. For mains we chose rib-eye steak and calves liver on spring onion mash-fantastic fresh quality ingredients well prepared and cooked and full of flavour. We shared a dessert of poached pears with crème freche, which was very good, and the slight delay was covered by an apology whilst we waited-no problem. As a couple who are fanatical about our food and the quality of service we could not fault any of it. The restaurant manager was friendly and informative about the new chef who has been there about three months. Please give the restaurant a go. You will not be disappointed we have paid a lot more for much less.
