Istanbul Iskembecisi Description

When everybody else has given up and gone home this is the place. It is considered to be actually fairly posh, in an area where there are mainly rather downmarket cafes and kebab houses. Open from noon until 5 am, it meets not only a need but also serves some really interesting dishes - like stuffed vine leaves or slow roasted lamb - from Turkey and the Middle East.

In general terms the cooking is not for the faint-hearted and the puddings, like their superb baklava, follow the pattern of the area. The café takes its name from a favourite dish, iskembe, a broth of finely chopped tripe, supported by kebabs or grills of chicken and lamb. Small wine list includes five from Turkey, with some French, starting at £10.
