J. Sheekey Description
J. Sheekey is a long established specialist fish and seafood restaurant just off Trafalgar Square in a hidden away position in an alleyway, however, it had become a bit of a shadow of its former self until the previous owners of the Caprice and The Ivy came along to work their magic touch and transform the faded glory back to full and vibrant life.
Now it is part of the Belgo Group, it has nonetheless retained all its individual praiseworthy virtues, and is rated as the Number One fish restaurant by both Zagat and Harden's, no mean achievement. Whilst laid out in a rather strange fashion, as a result of the shape of the room, everybody praises not just the quality of food, but the service also, and, as a result, you have to book well ahead to get in.
Fish can range from the mundane, like dressed crab or whitebait, through to the more exotic; there are a few alternative dishes to pander to non-fish eaters. The wine list is well chosen and worth studying, though there is little under £20.
Fixed Lunch
- £14.75 (2 courses) to £21.50 (3 courses), Sat - Sun

Your Reviews of J. Sheekey
Richard J P D'Silva (26 September 2004)
We visited here at the end of August 2004, having booked for a 6pm table, on a Sunday, only hours before.
Our table was in a great location and I love the decor - it is traditional which is my favourite, all dark wood and leather, polished silver and starched white napkins, lovely!
The staff are very friendly, very helpful and know their stuff, even where wine and food matching are concerned AND I had the jellied eel, which isn’t the easiest to pair with vino.
The food was good, NOT excellent, just cooked very well and ample proportions - good, honest fair but I expected more, maybe it has changed since Belgo took over but I wasn’t bowled over, Fishers in Edinburgh is what I was after but I didn’t get it, which was a little disappointing.
This said the whole experience was very pleasant and the dessert was awesome, as was the wine - just a shame that as this is a renowned seafood joint it wasn’t up to my rave reviews.
I shall go again and next time I shall have the Fish and Chips just to see if I maybe chose incorrectly on this visit.
