Jacksons Restaurant Description

A classic example of one of several little restaurants in Edinburgh, simply oozing character, this one is located hard by Jackson's Close, a 300 year old listed building on the Royal Mile.

The main restaurant is in the basement, with a handsome party room upstairs. In a city where a great pride is taken in the national cooking Jacksons aims to produce it to the highest possible standard. Any restaurant that produces haggis, that much under-rated dish of the country, to their standard, has to be applauded.

That, of course, is before you get to the wonderful salmon, venison and incomparable Scottish lamb. Try their Finan chowder, smoked fillet of Finan haddock steamed with a crisp white wine set in a rich fennel and saffron stew to start out on a contented evening.

House wine at £13.95 a bottle.

We did not enjoy our meal there at all, we had been there several times a few years ago and it was fantastic. The room was not very warm, most of the food was mediocre and the service was poor. We were so disappointed that we won’t be back.

We must have got there on an off night. Having been there several years ago and had the wonderful venison, we went full of expectation. Sadly the food was decidedly average and the service just about okay, although I think English was definitely not the waiter's first language. Thankfully we went for the set menu, which meant we still got change from £70, including wine. This is first restaurant in years that I have left without leaving a tip. Maybe we just got them on a bad night, judging from the other reviews.
