Jai Krishna has been a favourite haunt of ours for nearly 15 years. The food, southern Indian vegetarian, is delicious and the menu is really varied so you can either opt for an old favourite, or experiment. You'll find authentic cooking, with classics like bhaji, or regional specialities like patra, all delicious with tamarind sauce for starters. For mains, curries ranging from mushroom, aubergine to marrow and mutter paneer that are just divine. Side dishes like lemon or coconut rice top off the curries beautifully. The thali special for two is a safe bet. It's also bring your own, you just pay £0.50 for corkage, so no massive drinks bills unless you fancy about 10 lassies. The décor and the staff are very quaint. It's a bit like a canteen, with Formica tables and mock Indian décor, quite scruffy, and you have to write your own order and the members of staff bring it to you as it's cooked, with no fuss or airs or graces. It's a great feast all priced very cheaply. Regulars are greeted like old friends and there are many, but come 10.45, the staff will be putting their coats on. They know you'll always come back. A real local treat but also worth a trek to sample.
