Jalsha Restaurant Description
Whether it is the middle of a work day or at the end of a long, hectic day, Jalsha restaurant in Canterbury is a haven of peace. The authentic cuisine and friendly service are food for the soul. With over sixty varieties of tandoori, balti, passanda and korai dishes, there is something for every palate and every mood.
Like most Eastern restaurants, Jalsha lays a lot of emphasis on starters, and there is a long list to choose from. The restaurant uses the freshest ingredients available and avoids using artificial colouring so that the food retains its natural colour and flavour. Some unusual dishes offered are chicken with coconut, lychees, and ground almonds and cooked in a rich sauce, and lamb saag, succulent pieces of lamb cooked with spinach and spices. There are plenty of other combinations of sea food, meat, poultry or vegetables cooked in the vindaloo, Madras or curry styles of cuisine.
The choices of accompaniments is extensive too, with varieties from a tandoori roti to the rich, dry fruit filled Peshawari naan and exotic rice cooked with mince to its poor country cousin, simple steamed rice. The inclusion of a variety of dhansak, adds an unexpected, but not unwelcome hint of Persian cuisine.
Opened in 1993 by the Uddin family, Jalsha has been successful in offering tasty, authentic Eastern food and warm service. The restaurant can seat up to eighty people while the Jalsha Lounge can cover another thirty people and is available for private gatherings.
Jalsha, in Bengali means bringing people together, and this restaurant has certainly been living up to its name.

I ate again with my family last week and take back what I said before. Food was as excellent as ever, but the service had loosened up and was much more agreeable. Suspect Jalsha are now getting all their elements together: agreeable surroundings, superb Indian cuisine and - at last - warm and friendly service.

Well, A Parmar obviously had a bad experience, which I can't explain. All I can say is that my wife and I went there for lunch today on impulse. We both suddenly fancied a curry and being slightly short of time didn't fancy trying somewhere new. The place was empty, we were obviously the only people eating at lunchtime, and I had to shout down the corridor to hound up a member of staff. I suspect they only open at lunch because they have to be prepping up the evening menu; might as well see if there's any passing trade. Anyway, my wife had the tandoori chicken and I indulged in it with a bit of nostalgia and a lamb tikka biriyani. Both were absolutely exact, the spicing spot on and absolutely fresh, with the chicken clearly straight out of the tandoor. Incidentally, the hotplate with plastic handles; I don't know how you'd describe it, but they're those things kept in a stack and are supposed to keep your dishes hot, was virtually incandescent. The tarka dhal and vegetable curry started bubbling furiously! What’s the point? All restaurants have off days, and A Parma obviously encountered one such. Also they have their foibles, and we have always found the Jalsha serving staff a bit wooden and even stand-offish, but we have invariably had exceedingly good dishes at a very reasonable price. They are still highly recommended.
