Joe Allen Restaurant - London Description
In keeping with its Theatreland location Joe Allen's bare brick walls are lined with pictures and posters of celebrities and their stage shows. This cosy basement restaurant is a popular choice with both pre and post theatre diners, including the cast so look out for familiar faces. You'll find classic American choices on the menu like Caesar salad, fishcakes and grilled swordfish steaks. Desserts are classic rather than imaginative such as brownies with hot fudge sauce and good old-fashioned pies with ice cream.

Joe Allen's has been one of our favourite London restaurants for some years and every occasion was a happy experience. The last but one meal we had there in autumn 2007 was good and enjoyable. There was a wonderful atmosphere and good service. Our visit a month ago was a disappointment and the atmosphere was gone. The food was not particularly good - no, that is not fair. The food was poor and the service, non-existent. What has happened? We live in Spain and a visit to Joe Allen's has always been on our schedule. I do not think we shall be repeating the experience.

As a chef I went to Joe Allen's with friends who had recommended it. I can honestly say it would have been one of the worst meals I have eaten in a long time. The food is boring with no imagination. My wife had a sirloin steak that was really gristly. The staff were not interested and certainly not attentive. My colleagues also were very disappointed. That delightful experience then cost us approx £45/head. I do not mind paying for good food and a good experience but the restaurant was bad. I will not be going back. I would rather eat at McDonalds.
