In keeping with its Theatreland location Joe Allen's bare brick walls are lined with pictures and posters of celebrities and their stage shows. This cosy basement restaurant is a popular choice with both pre and post theatre diners, including the cast so look out for some familiar faces.
The Joe Allen restaurant menu ushers in some classic American choices like smoked salmon with shallots and capers; salt beef with dill pickle and Asagio cheese salad with mustard dressing; slow roast pork with candied sweet potatoes and caramelized apple sauce, and barbecued spare ribs with rice, wilted spinach, black-eyed peas and corn muffin. For desserts there are some easy combinations like caramelised apple and hazelnut tart with hazelnut sauce, chocolate brownie and pecan pie.
Lunchtime treats are punctuated with buffalo chicken wings and blue cheese dressing, beef and smoked paprika stew with buttered tagliatelle, and raspberry and vanilla tart.

I have been eating at Joe Allen for thirty years and it just gets better and better. The lobster burger is fantastic and the atmosphere is great. The first star I spotted there was Diane from Crossroads but I am too short-sighted now to recognise faces!

Joe Allen's has been one of our favourite London restaurants for some years and every occasion was a happy experience. The last but one meal we had there in autumn 2007 was good and enjoyable. There was a wonderful atmosphere and good service. Our visit a month ago was a disappointment and the atmosphere was gone. The food was not particularly good - no, that is not fair. The food was poor and the service, non-existent. What has happened? We live in Spain and a visit to Joe Allen's has always been on our schedule. I do not think we shall be repeating the experience.
